Location: Angel Fire is nestled in the majestic Moreno Valley, in the Sangre de Cristo Mountain range, in the north east section of New Mexico, in Colfax County. The Moreno Valley is a 15-mile long, 3-mile wide, high alpine valley. It is about 23 miles east of Taos via a stunning drive through the Taos Canyon on US Hwy 64. Angel Fire is 94 miles northeast of Santa Fe, 152 miles northeast of Albuquerque, 50 miles south of the Colorado border, and 160 miles east of the Texas panhandle border.

Elevation: 8,382′ at base of valley. Surrounding mountains range from 11,086′ of Agua Fria Peak on the south end of the valley to 12,441′ of Baldy Peak at the north end of the valley. Wheeler Peak, at 13,161′, the highest mountain in the state, forms the northwest boundary of the valley. Latitude N36 degrees 25.24 minutes; Longitude: W105 degrees 17.40 minutes. The incorporated Village of Angel Fire covers an area of 18,450 acres. The average lot size is .756 acres.

Climate:  Winter temperatures are generally moderately cool, averaging in the mid-teens in the early morning to mid-thirties in the daytime. Our average annual snowfall is 140″ in the valley and over 210″ on the summit of the ski area. Our average annual precipitation in spring and summer is 7″ with moderate temperatures, varying from early morning lows in the mid-thirties to mid-afternoon highs of 75 degrees with very low humidity levels. Average days of sunshine is 272.

Estimated population of village: 1,082 permanent full time residents per US census in the year 2020; we also have approximately 1600 seasonal residents. Many of the seasonal residents who own their homes or condos, rent STR to visitors during the time they are absent.

Fair Weather Activities (May-Oct) include:

New Mexico’s highest Zipline Tour, In the summer months the Angel Fire ski mountain is transformed into a nationally acclaimed Mountain Bike Park with an 18-hole Disc Golf Course at the top of the Chile Express Chair Lift. Also available on the mountain are a climbing wall, euro bungy, many hiking trails, and a restaurant with amazing scenic views. If you are a fishing enthusiast Angel Fire is surrounded by mountain streams and lakes. Within the village limits of Angel Fire is Monte Verde Lake that offers fly fishing clinics as well as paddle-boat and canoe rentals. Take a scenic chairlift ride or stop by the Chamber office to obtain trail maps for hiking, biking, ATV guided tours and horseback riding. Take a horse-drawn wagon ride that includes Cowboy dinners and/or breakfasts, or book a horseback gold pan tour into the Carson National Forest. During the summer months enjoy children’s theatre performances, Music from Angel Fire chamber music concerts, Art-Up Northern New Mexico Studio Tour, and wildlife and scenic photography. Take an art class or experience casual or fine dining.

Obtain permits for Big game hunting in the proper season, primarily elk.

Skiing and snowboarding:

At the Angel Fire Resort Ski & Snowboard area there are more than 560 acres of skiable terrain with 95 trails on private land, and 9 ski lifts.  The elevation is 10,677 feet at the summit and has a vertical drop of 2,077 feet. Of the 95 trails, 22% of the trails are for beginners (green),  49% of the trails are designated intermediate (blue), 25% of the trails are expert levels (black) and 4% are extreme expert level ( double-black).  The ski area includes 3 Terrain Parks and 6 Glades.  The annual skier days in an average season equal 104 days. Also available are  an internationally known ski & snowboard school, night skiing and snowboarding, snowmobiling, a full-service Nordic Center with cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, a tubing hill, and a sledding hill. Enjoy horseback rides, horse drawn sleigh rides, cowboy dinners and breakfasts. Wildlife and scenic photography are also a favorite.  Be sure to visit on Christmas Eve & New Year’s Eve when you will be treated to a torchlight parade down the front of the ski mountain followed by a brilliant firework display. If you prefer a calmer non-athletic visit, check out Art Classes from many of our local artists or simply indulge in the various restaurants who offer a mountain fine dining experience while you soak up the fresh air and beautiful scenery.
