We recommend picking up a NM state map at the first Visitor’s Center inside the NM state line or at the Angel Fire Chamber of Commerce, 3407 Mountain View Blvd., Angel; Fire, NM.

Angel Fire is located in the majestic Moreno Valley in Colfax County, New Mexico, 23 miles east of Taos via US Hwy 64 and 152 miles northeast of Albuquerque.

The Moreno Valley is a 15 miles long, 3 mile wide, high alpine valley with an 8,382′ base elevation. Surrounding mountains of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of the Rocky Mountains, range from 11,086′ Agua Fria Peak on the south end of the valley to 12,441′ Baldy Peak at the north end of the valley. Wheeler Peak at 13,161′, the highest mountain in the state of New Mexico, forms the northwest boundary of the valley situated in the Carson National Forest which borders the Taos Pueblo lands. Suggested Routes of travel:

From Albuquerque – take I-25 to Santa Fe, 285/68 N to Taos, 64 to blinking light; Hwy 434 into Angel Fire 

From Amarillo, Tx – take 287 N. to Dumas, 87 W. to Hartley – Dalhart – Clayton, 56/412 W. to Springer, I-25 N. to 58 West to Cimarron, 64 W. to Eagle Nest, 64 S. to blinking light; Hwy 434 S. into Angel Fire.

Alternative Route from Amarillo, Tx: In Amarillo take I-40 W. to Tucumcari, NM, Hwy 104 to Las Vegas, Hwy 518 to Mora, Hwy 434 into Angel Fire. The last 6 miles of the road from Mora to Angel Fire is very narrow canyon road, with barely room for two vehicles and the final 6 miles into Angel Fire is not recommended for RV’s or trailers in the winter months, as it can be hard to maneuver. 

Alternative Route from Amarillo: NOT Recommended. Some GPS and google directions will tell you that it is faster to travel through Hwy 120 from Ocate, to Black Lake into Angel Fire. This is a narrow rocky dirt road mountain pass with extreme sharp turns and steep inclines, wide enough at some places for only one vehicle.  It is NOT RECOMMENDED FOR RV’S OR TRAILORS OR NON 4-WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLES. IT CAN BE HARD TO MANUEVER FOR ANY VEHICLE IN WINTER CONDITIONS or could be closed due to inclement weather/road conditions and you would have to go out of your way to seek another path.

From Dallas/Fort Worth  – take Hwy 287 to Amarillo and follow either of the directions above from Amarillo.

From Denver Colorado – I-25 S past Raton, NM a few miles, turn right onto Hwy 64, drive though Cimarron and Eagle Nest to the blinking light: turn into Angel Fire on Hwy 434

From Kansas City, Ks (as told to us by a Chamber member) – Take I-35 to Emporia, KS – get on Hwy US 50 and go west. At Dodge City take US 56 southwest going through Oklahoma. Enter NM by Clayton, NM. US 56 ends at Springer, NM. Get onto I-25 North for 3 miles to NM Hwy 58 west to Cimarron. Pick up US Hwy 64 west to Eagle Nest. Continue on Hwy 64 out of Eagle Nest – Angel Fire is 12 miles south of Eagle Nest. From Kansas City its a 12 hour trip.

Alternate Route from Kansas City, KS: Take the Amtrak from KC to Raton and rent a car in Raton. Drive to AF on US 64. Train ride is about 12 hours, then 2 more hours to Angel Fire from Raton. Check with Amtrak regarding prices: 800-872-7245

From Lubbock, Tx – take I-27N to Amarillo, then follow directions above

Alternative from Lubbock, Tx– Take Hwy 84 to Farwell NM, Hwy 60 to Fort Sumner, Hwy 84 to Santa Rosa, I-40W to Hwy 84, 84 to I-25. I-25E to Las Vegas, Hwy 518 to Mora, Hwy 434 to Angel Fire. The road last 6 miles of the road from Mora to Angel Fire is very narrow canyon road, with barely room for two vehicles- it is not recommended for RV’s or trailers and it can be hard to maneuver in winter conditions.
