Summer Safety Information

Thank you for your interest in Angel Fire!  Listed below are some safety guidelines to assist you during your stay.

The mountainside in Moreno Valley is also home to many large and small predators including mountain lions, black bears, bobcats and coyotes. When enjoying the outdoors you should keep a close eye on small children and family pets and remember – Never, Never, Never feed the animals!

BE BEAR AWARE       FIRE SAFETY       WATER CONSERVATION
  • DO NOT FEED BEARS!
  • NEVER approach a bear.
  • Inquire about recent bear activity in the area.
  • Store food and garbage in closed, sturdy containers indoors.
  • Keep children and pets close at hand when you are outdoors, especially on hiking trails.
  • Make noise when you are hiking: clack rocks together, talk, sing, break sticks.
  • Clean your barbecue grill – store it inside.
  • Bring hummingbird feeders (and all other bird/squirrel feeders) in at night.
  • Do not put pet food bowls outside.
  • Always put trash in dumpsters and close and latch the lid.
    There is a re-cycle/trash center at 27 Halo Pines Terrace by the police station.  If dumpsters are full – take your trash to the Transfer Station located on Camino Grande Road – NEVER LEAVE YOUR TRASH BESIDE OR ON TOP OF THE DUMPSTER OR ON THE DECK OF YOUR VACATION RENTAL
  • Do not leave items in your cars that are fragranced – such as:
    food/ used food containers or food wrappers / chewing gum /aerosol cans /deodorant / soap / breath mints / pet food/ bird seed or other grain /fishing equipment, bait or fish. Bears can and do occasionally open car doors to get to these fragrances.    Below you will find a few safety tips if you encounter one of these magnificent and important animals

  • IF YOU ENCOUNTER A BEAR:

    Stay Calm

    If you see a predator that hasn’t seen you, calmly leave the area.  As you move away, talk aloud to let the animal discover your presence.

     Stop

    Back away slowly while facing the predator if you can do so safely.  Avoid eye contact.  Don’t run as this might stimulate its instinct to chase and attack.

     Do all you can to appear larger.

    Raise your arms and open your jacket.  If you have small children with you, pick them up

    Never Approach

    Wild animals are unpredictable; however, they will usually avoid a confrontation.

    Watch for young

    Coming between a female and her young can be extremely dangerous.

     Convince it you are not prey

    If the animal approaches closer or behaves aggressively, arm yourself with a large stick, throw rocks or sticks at it, speak louder and more firmly to it.  Convince the predator that you are dominant and a danger to it.

    Fight Back

    If the predator does attack, fight back.  Use any possible object (rocks, sticks, backpacks, caps jackets and even you bare hands) as a weapon.

April through July are traditionally high fire danger months in New Mexico.
The best way to fight fires is before they start.
Fire restrictions will vary for municipalities, the state, forest districts,
state parks, and counties.
We have indicated general safety guidelines that we all need to follow,
not only when fire danger is high, but at all times.

  • Learn about the conditions on public lands.
  • If you smoke, please smoke in your vehicle and use your ashtray. Do not hang your cigarette outside the window of your car, while driving, one spark can burn an entire forest!!
  • Faulty catalytic converters on your ATV’s can emit sparks – keep your vehicle off of dry grass.
  • Fireworks are illegal within the Angel Fire Village limits and discouraged in surrounding areas due to fire danger.
  • Check current fire restrictions for Angel Fire by contacting the Angel Fire Fire Dept. at 575-377-3347
  • Check fire restrictions for all of New Mexico by calling 1-877-864-6985
  • Call the Carson National Forest, 575-758-6200, and the New Mexico State Parks office, 1-888-NM-PARKS, for specific campground information prior to planning your camping trip.

 

Check with the numbers listed above before you plan to cook-out, start a campfire,
or use welding equipment to see if any restrictions are currently in place.

Fire restrictions may change day to day / month to month, or may be lifted altogether.
